A Time for Silence

I’ve spent a lot of the day talking today and I think I may well be all talked out.

It hasn’t helped either that the weather has been hot and humid, quite exhausting actually, after all of our lovely summer’s days of late.

Now, it is raining, not surprising after the humidity of today, and the frogs are happily croaking away in the stillness of the night.

Do you ever have days like I’ve had today? Days when your brain and body both feel rather lethargic?

The talking I enjoyed, the heat not so much. It’s Friday, the weekend is ahead of us and the summer holidays are all but over. The last of the school’s will reopen on Monday.

And so begins another year.

A year of new beginnings; new friends; new dreams; making new memories.

New lessons to be learned.

New mountains to conquer.

A year to know when to talk and when to remain silent.

Silence, to restore the soul.

And now is a silent time….

Goodnight. xxx

On Being Alone, Without Being Lonely

“If you make friends with yourself you will never be alone.” ~ Maxwell Maltz.

The universe, in its infinite wisdom, has handed me, (on a silver platter!) the opportunity to have some time alone, at home, without leaving me so much as a vehicle in which to venture forth into the big, wide open expanse of the world.

Alone for three, maybe even four days.

No family to run around after. They have gone away.

It was mentioned in passing, almost as an obligation, that I may accompany them, if I so wished. They already knew my answer.

But why did they even bother asking, I wondered?

Let me consider for just a moment, which would I prefer? ~

  • Four days, baking on a beach, watching a surf carnival in the searing heat, sleeping in a communal room with maybe fifty other people (make that mostly noisy children and complete strangers!) on a camping air-bed, no electricity and an outside garden hose for a shower….OR
  • Time at home, alone, with my comfortable, familiar bed, and all modern conveniences?

You would be forgiven at this point if you are considering the possibility that I have absolutely no sense of adventure whatsoever. The truth of the matter is this ~

In the summertime, as people are flocking to the beach by the million, I favour the indoor life. The garden is my limit. I’m not, nor ever have been, a summertime beach-goer.

I prefer the beach during the winter!

If you are to believe the above quote from the author of the book “Psycho-Cybernetics”, Maxwell Maltz, (and I do!), I have made friends with myself.

I am not lonely, being alone, however I do have a problem.

What is one to do, when one’s list of what one would like to do when spending time in one’s own company, would cover a ten kilometre linear strip?

During this morning’s perusal of articles on the internet, I discovered an article of interest, written by a minimalist, who suggests writing a list of just the most important things you wish to accomplish.

If there are thirty things listed, halve it. Then cut it back some more, until there are just three items on the list.

Setting the task of accomplishing three tasks, one task at a time, is achievable.

The secret to achievement is to stay focussed on the task at hand. Do not become distracted by the phone, checking your emails or finding out what your friends are up to on Facebook.

I can do that. That’s the easy part.

However, how does one compact nearly twenty-six years of “want-to-do’s” into four days of alone time???

Old habits die hard and I am in danger of choosing firstly to vacuum the house and catch up on the ironing, however, I have resisted the temptation, whilst giving myself a well deserved pat on the back!

Three sub-headings seem appropriate….

Writing ~

1 – Work on a draft for all of the blog posts I have running around in my head. The words can be itemised into separate posts at a later date. Once the words are written, whilst uninterrupted, they are not left to memory, which can, at times, fail!

2 – Start up the new blog I have been toying with for a few weeks now, again drafting posts to be edited later.

Craft ~

1 – Finish the crochet project that my dear, departed Mum was working on over seventeen years ago. She would appreciate that!

2 – Finish the vivid blue scarf I began making for my daughter, two years ago. She would appreciate that!

3 – Work towards finishing some of the cross-stitch embroidery projects I have been working on for myself for, maybe, ten years. I would appreciate that!

Gardening ~

1 – Potter around the garden, removing any dratted weeds that have reared their heads during the recent weeks of rain.

2 – Prepare the ground for the new garden out the front, to run along the full length of the driveway and along the boundary between ourselves and our neighbour.

With three headings now prepared I will think no more. There is only so much one can fit into four days, even when one is alone!

(Photo credit for today goes to the unknown photographer who last summer took a photo of my surfie-son, alone on a board, face all zinced up, out in the Pacific Ocean somewhere. I have it on good authority that he was not too far from the shore!)

The Sounds of Silence

How long has it been…three, perhaps four weeks, since I have spent the day alone, at home?

I can’t quite remember; it’s been so long, too long.

Days of solitude are a necessity to me, as essential as food and sleep.

But it hasn’t always been that way.

When my four children were all much younger the house was continually noisy, in one way or another. Talking, television switched on by the first child out of bed in the morning, music playing (in more than one room), phones ringing, and usually all at the same time!

On the odd occasion when I would be in the house, in silence, I couldn’t cope; I simply had to switch on music, or the television, anything to cut the deafening silence!

I’m not sure how the changes occurred, the changes within myself, which brought about the demand (yes, it was a demand!) for peace and silence around me.

The sounds around home have altered now. My second oldest lives in her own home now, my eldest is quiet by nature (thank you, God!), and then there’s the two teenagers.

As is the case with many siblings, they are constantly bickering, only pausing long enough to sing together. Yes, sing. They have the same taste in music and, as teenagers do, know every word, to every song they hear.

Their singing can actually be rather entertaining, especially so when I way up the pro’s and cons…would I rather listen to squabbling, or the singing? Hmm…

Today there will be no voices, no phones, no mobile phones, no skype, no texting, no online chatting ~ everyone is out.

I have the house to myself.

My herbal tea is made and my ironing awaits me. Whilst ironing, the only sounds I will hear will be the pattering of the raindrops falling, the occasional chorus of frogs croaking and the distant buzzing of the cicada’s.

It’s a day to restore my equilibrium, to silence my busy brain, to focus on the here and now.

A day to appreciate the Sounds of Silence….

Polenta Cake (With Pine Nuts, Raisins & Figs)

Whenever I see a recipe with an unusual twist to it, curiosity gets the better of me. I just have to try it out. This Polenta Cake recipe did not disappoint!

It is, without a doubt, the most unusual cake I have ever tasted. In fact, it seems wrong to call it a cake! It appears to have a rather savoury flavour at first, which is followed by a sudden burst of  “sweet” when biting into the figs & raisins.

Before trying this recipe I would recommend making sure you have the large, 23 cm cake tin required – you will need it.  A spring form tin is the best to use. This is not a small cake & would be an ideal choice for serving a large crowd of friends.

Next time I make the Polenta Cake, I will try adding perhaps just 2 tablespoons of the fennel seeds, as the aniseed flavour is quite overpowering in flavour, even for an aniseed lover like myself!

When eating leftovers, I would also recommend warming the cake slightly again, as the beautiful flavours are brought out by warmth in the cake.

Polenta Cake (With Pine Nuts, Raisins & Figs).
400 g polenta
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons olive oil
60g butter
2 eggs
100g pine nuts, toasted
150g raisins
150g figs, sliced
3 tablespoons fennel seeds
4 tablespoons raw sugar
250g plain flour

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees C and grease & line a 23cm cake tin.

In a large saucepan, bring to the boil 850ml water & gradually pour in the polenta whilst stirring the water constantly. Lower the heat to simmer, add the olive oil & salt. Simmer for 15 minutes.

Stir the polenta regularly as it will become very thick. Remove the pan from the heat & stir in the butter.

Add beaten eggs & stir the mixture well. Add toasted pine nuts, raisins, figs, raw sugar & fennel seeds & mix thoroughly. Stir the flour into the mixture.

Spoon into the prepared tin & press in firmly. To smooth the top of the cake you may need to use your hands. Decorate the top of the cake with some extra toasted pine nuts, if desired.

Bake for 40 minutes, using a cake tester to make sure it is cooked through. Take out of the cake tin while still warm. Best served warm, when the flavours of the cake are most prominent.

Seasons Changing…In The Garden

The air has been changing of late. Although there have been some hot days recently, we have had a few cooler days this week, along with cooler nights. The fresher air tempted me to venture out into my garden last week, to survey the damage of a long hot summer on my beloved garden.

To my surprise, there weren’t too many casualties. The weeds were running rampant in parts of the garden, but were easily removed due to a recent downpour of rain, which had soaked the earth, enabling the weeds to come out with ease. I had feared that I had lost my Camellia Sasanqua, which seemed to have totally disappeared, however the weeds may have actually protected it from the elements as it seems to have remained unscathed!

On Sunday afternoon, my 12 year old son & I made a trip to our local nursery. Although still quite a hot day, my boy enjoyed ducking in & out of the sprinkler system set up at the nursery! We arrived home an hour & a half later, laden mostly with various herbs that we had chosen.  The late afternoon weather was extremely kind to us, cooling down beautifully so that we could plant all of our newly purchased treats!

So far we have planted new batches of thyme, sage, coriander, basil, dill, both flat leaf & curly parsley & my son’s favorite, chocolate mint! My chives, peppermint & rosemary plants had survived summers onslaught of heat. I have new plants of cherry tomatoes, a huge family favourite, & was thrilled to find a number of new tomato plants had popped up throughout the garden, where my son had stood to eat freshly picked tomatoes last year!

My lemon, grapefruit, lime trees all have the beginnings of small fruit on their branches & the pecan nut tree has an abundance of nuts on it, which are starting to ripen & fall from the branches now! The outer casing of the nut is easily removed by hand, then a gentle tap from a small hammer on the shell breaks open the inner shell & there you have beautiful, freshly grown pecan nuts!

The photo to the right is one I took just before Christmas, showing the green pecan nuts starting to develop. They have now turned brown & will drop from the tree when ripe. I have a delicious Pecan Nut Pie recipe, which I will be posting here shortly!

It is such a pleasure to watch the trees & plants grow in my garden & I am even more thrilled that the weather is now cooling down. Sunburned limbs are not a good look on anyone!

The simple pleasures in life really are the best. All I need is my garden tools, a fine day, a few new plants to add to my collection & I’m set! With the gentle sound of the wind-chimes rattling away in the breeze & the occasional visit from a baby Magpie or Pheasant Coucal, what could be better?
