What a hot day it has been today! We’ve had a series of days of higher than expected temperatures since the new year began, and I’ve had enough!
In keeping with my word for the year, authentic, I am staying true to my feelings, and announcing that I’ve had enough with this heat. I’m not happy.
The truth of the matter is, I’ve tolerated our hot summer days rather well for the last two summers, although they have been unusually cool for here. When I say cool, I mean less humid. Temperatures have still reached up to over thirty degrees celsius, but with less humidity. This summer though, the humidity is back, squeezing the oxygen from the air and leaving us all dripping with sweat!
Today, I made a decision of mammoth proportions, totally out of character for me, whilst at the same time being authentically me ~ I’ve ordered a small, portable air-conditioning unit, which will live in my office/sewing room. The cooler air will make me feel a lot happier.
How can anyone be expected to work with a clear head, whilst battling to think straight with their melted brain? It’s simply impossible to do so. I have work related sewing to do and so many sewing and craft projects that I can hardly wait to begin, but not in this heat!
I’m not a big fan of air-conditioners. Ceiling fans cool the air very nicely, however I don’t have a ceiling fan in my office. Tomorrow, however, I will be collecting my mini air-conditioner. The money spent on the unit and the extra electricity used to operate it will be earned back tenfold through work production, which has currently ceased, and peace of mind; no more being agitated by the hot days. And I’ll only use it on the hottest of hot days.
There is often a display of something very special indeed to be had after an unbearably hot day, and that is the cooler relief that an afternoon storm brings. And even more special is the sky….just look at those colours!
No one can control the weather and it’s no use trying to fight the heat. I think I may have just worked out a solution to staying busy, which I want to do, whilst tolerating the heat….perfect! 🙂

True, the afternoon storms and evening sunset are gifts, but it only makes sense to air condition your studio so you can work. Very sensible. And it IS a gorgeous sun drenched photo!

Hi Joanne – yes, your personal comfort is more important!
John tells me that it’s so hot right there in summer due the humidity from all the vegetation coming up from the valley below – which is just a sauna bowl really – so beautiful but so hot – and yes, you can feel quite justified in getting yourself a little air conditioner, and perhaps have a ceiling fan installed later (or sooner) if you can..they’re not expensive and some come with timers.. (About $100 to have installed)..
…And yes – Acceptance (my word) is a good word for this year too, but Acceptance doesn’t have to be Tolerance either..Good on you Joanne…xx

Haha, yes indeed, acceptance doesn’t have to be tolerance at all, which is what I have been doing with the heat every summer…tolerating it! My husband can install a ceiling fan for me (when he has the time!) and I will be using that, except on the hottest days which we are in the midst of now.

I hear you on the subject of air conditioning! When the humidity is up there it is impossible to work or even to think. But the gardens (and birds?) seem to love it. Sometimes I wonder how our ancestors made do without air conditioning. Last year our July was the hottest on record in Connecticut. And here we are six months later collecting record-breaking low temperatures. Wish I could send a little of this frigid polar air your way!

Most of the reason I have resisted owning an air conditioner for so long is because of the point you made…are we all getting soft? Our ancestors had to cope with all kinds of weather, so why can’t we? I can’t answer that question other than to say different times teach us different things. I hope you are staying warm and cosy.

I’m so pleased you like my kookaburra photos Sheryl. They are the happiest birds and so friendly too. I don’t know if I’ve told you this before but I have one kookaburra, I call him Larry, who takes food from my hand and we can even stroke his feathers, he is so tame. 🙂

We had a small taste of the humidity you describe when we travelled up north? in Queensland in Dec. The heat on its own would have been bearable, we have similar temperatures here in California, but the humidity was so intense. It would take some getting used to, I’m sure. I hope you are enjoying your cooler air by now.

How lovely that you had the opportunity to spend some time in Queensland Colleen, and yes, that is up north from us. That’s the thing about the heat, not so much the temperature but the humidity accompanying the heat! I am enjoying the slightly cooler temperatures now, still warm, but very pleasant. It’s great to know that you enjoy my photos, that’s very kind of you to say. 🙂

I am not a fan of the heat either, Joanne – and I live in the hot, humid, Deep South! I just enjoy winter while it lasts, and never, ever complain about the cold. Hope you get some relief soon! ❤

I don’t expect full relief from the heat until March Stacy, but right now the nights are cooler, which helps. No one is happy when they can’t sleep well!

In our summer, we may have a few days together that go over 30 degrees Celsius and that is a “heat wave”. I really could not take that extreme heat you’re going through. On the other hand I hated that cold weather we had a week ago.
Don’t blame you for getting the mini air conditioner … hope it helps …

Wish I could get some of your hot weather! It’s been very cold where I live in Vandalia, Ohio; much of the USA has been in the deep freeze all through January.
