The moon caught my eye a few days ago. Every night, the sky looked so bright and I would look up to see the moon dancing with the clouds. I took the photo above on Saturday night. And it looks very clear, very moon-ish, all cratery and rickety around the edges.
Last night when I took myself just a tad east of home, towards the Pacific Ocean, for a view of the Lunar Eclipse, when I first spotted the moon it looked like a red ball in the sky. Moments later though, the red had diminished. And the photos I took didn’t turn out as clear as the one taken on Saturday night either.
Here is what I saw last night. Actually, it’s what my camera saw, I saw the moon through a much clearer lens ~ my eyes. Perhaps the darkness of the eclipse didn’t agree with the eye of my camera, but it shows you a few stages of the eclipse and for that I am grateful.
By 7:00 PM, the moon looked like its usual self. The fun of the eclipse was over.
For future reference, I have made a note to myself to set an alarm to remind me to get outside to see the eclipse earlier, as apparently most of the Blood Moon effect showed up earlier than my photos began.
So mark your calendars, the next Lunar Eclipse is on October the 8th this year!

Here we did not get the blood moon effect until the end of the eclipse. Interesting. I think the lack of light on the moon muted the crater shadows.

Your photos captured this beautifully Joanne! A mockingbird woke us up just in time to see the moon in it’s total eclipse phase. The color was fascinating. It’s easy to understand why there was so much mystery and unease around these eclipses in earlier times.

I didn’t get to see the lunar eclipse though I wanted to. The redness was set to take place at 1am so I was long asleep by then. I don’t think the weather was cooperative here either. Thanks for sharing these!

Sorry for taking so long to get over here, Joanne. These shots are beautiful, even if you were disappointed in them. My moon shots are always a little disappointing. We didn’t get to see the eclipse this time around, the sky was overcast. Thanks for sharing these – at least I got a chance to see it from your part of the world!

I like your moon shots, Joanne. It’s really hard to get that darned camera to see what our eyes see. But sometimes it’s fun to see what the camera does create. I was down in Florida at the time and my mom woke me up (neither of us could sleep until 3:40 when the Big Event happened) and then we crept around outside the condo in our pajamas and saw the beautiful moon. Thank you for sharing these photos.
