Where the Wild Creatures Live

A wild baby hare, spending the day inside, in the coolness of our shower.

We had another unexpected little garden visitor here this morning. This creature, as opposed to the frogs and cicadas, was a quiet little thing.

At first we were not sure whether it was a baby rabbit or a hare. Either way, it would not have survived the day where it was, out in the full strength midday sun, all alone.

We put the little fellow into our shower recess with a saucer of cool water, while we scoured the internet for information on him.

By later this afternoon we had concluded that he was a wild baby hare. If we tried to domesticate him, he would have no doubt died within a short space of time. Hares need to be free to survive.

We often see fully grown hares around the garden, so it would be logical to believe that is what he is.

According to the information that we read, he needed to be returned to the garden at the end of the day, when the heat of the day had subsided; to around the same place he had been found.

We found a sheltered area, with plenty of hiding places and shelter from the elements, and left him with another shallow dish of water.

It would be nice to think he will continue to survive in our garden. I’m quite happy to share our garden with all of these harmless, wild creatures.

Such a little cutie!

Over the Back Fence….

Possum

When my first child left home, rather than being the emotional ordeal some would imagine it to be, I felt very excited for her, as she embarked on the next phase of the journey of her life.

The time was right for her to spread her wings and discover the adventures awaiting her out there in the magical world of adulthood.

I knew she would never be far away from me. Even if distance separated us, she would always remain close to me in my heart.

As it turns out, there isn’t an awful lot of distance between us, as she lives only about a ten minute drive from home and I see her nearly every day of the week, as we work together!

Over the past three or four years, my girl has become more herself, rather than a reflection of the person she thought her parents wanted her to be. And it is a wonderful experience, getting to know the adult version of the sweet little girl we nurtured for so many years.

Although she has matured into becoming her own person in recent years, one aspect of her personality has remained constant throughout her entire life ~ she loves animals.

It is a regular occurrence for me to receive an email containing a photo of her latest “friend” who she has discovered inside her home or out in the garden.

The cute little possum in the night time photo above is one of Hayley’s little visitors.

Over the back fence of Hayley’s house is a large expanse of grassy paddock. In its glory days, the area was once a well kept golf course, which contained a very well known country club, well frequented by locals and visitors alike.

Somewhere over the years, the club managed to go belly-up and the area is now kept reasonably in check by a herd of cattle!

Over the Fence

Not a cow lover herself, despite her love of animals, Hayley knew I would fully appreciate photos of her bovine visitors.

As you can see in this photo, in the foreground is a small metal gate, which leads out from Hayley’s back garden into the expanse of grass, which was once the golf course.

Grazing Cows

Tomorrow I will show you a series of photos which require no words. The expressions on the face say it all! But you’ll have to wait ‘til tomorrow for the whole story.

Clue ~ the story involves the cows….and one of Hayley’s closest friends! 🙂

Sunday Afternoon

This afternoon, my trusty little camera and I took ourselves outside to see if we could find one of our infamous and stunningly beautiful sunsets.

Hmm, no such luck today; however, we did manage some very pretty photos.

The moon has made an early appearance. Well, either that, or it has been hanging around visibly in the sky all day! Either way, my photo came out rather well, I thought.

Afternoon Moon

The northern sky is a brilliant blue right now, but the southern sky is sporting some rather grey clouds.

Southern Sky

Whilst standing in the shade of a massive Poinciana tree I had a trial run of taking a series of photos pointing the camera directly into the sun. This photo is my favourite.

Setting Summer Sun

As the weather begins to cool down, (I’m sure it will, very soon!) my camera and I have made a deal to take our walks further afield than our own garden. Who knows what we may find! 🙂

And Now For the Latest News at Home Life Online…

The Holden

Glitches ~ A Thing of the Past?

It would appear that the recent glitches on my website may be a thing of the past. A change of theme may have corrected the problems I’ve been experiencing lately. Fingers crossed, touch wood and here’s hoping!

Now all I need to do is add a few more personal touches and all will be well again. 🙂

On The Home Front…

Miss Eighteen, of “just-finished-school” and “casual-job” fame, has just applied for, and received, her first ever credit card. She wanted the card for a specific purpose and has a five months interest free period.

Wanting to check out if the card worked, she purchased a $3.92 packet of chips, to share with her brother. When she arrived home, she immediately made a payment of $3.92 onto her credit card!

Her family trusts that she will continue with these responsible financial practises!

Managing Without a Car. (Photo Story)

A routine service check on my four year old Holden Commodore has revealed some unexpected problems. An engine oil leak has been discovered, preventing the car from being passed for registration, which was due yesterday.

The repairs on the car would have been completed by this morning, if Holden had sent the right parts.

The repairs would have further been completed by this afternoon, if Holden had sent all of the right parts in the second delivery!

With the help of my two eldest children, hitching a ride has not been a problem for me.

(Is the Universe trying to tell me something?)

And Cutting a Long Story Short…

This morning, I took a walk around a very familiar block, in the industrial area at South Tweed Heads, admiring shrubs planted many years ago, and still thriving, at two locations where I have had businesses located in years gone by.

Even in my workplaces, I have tended whatever garden has been available for me to tend!

My latest garden, at my latest workplace, will be given the attention it is crying out for as soon as the weather cools down just a tad.

I will reveal my new workplace soon, as soon as I’m given some photos, taken on my daughter’s camera. (Geez, that girl is slow. They were taken last September!!)

Today’s Weather.

(What kind of news would this be, if it didn’t end with the weather?!)

Google Weather tells me it is currently cloudy, 26 degrees Celsius (or 78 F) and 65% humidity. Tomorrow is predicted to reach 27 degrees and Google hasn’t decided if it will be sunny, raining or cloudy!

My home thermometer tells me it’s 29 degrees Celsius (83 F) and 63 % humidity. A glance outside the window reveals sunshine! For tomorrow, I predict the weather will be whatever I see when I look outside my window again! 😉

Eight Powerless Hours

Picture this…sitting quietly, alone, at the computer. Sweltering hot Saturday afternoon, about 4:30 p.m. Getting in earlier with your blog post than you have all week.

WHAM!!! The power cuts out, followed immediately by a series of intermittent crackling sounds, out on the street.

Computer’s down and work’s not saved.

Walking up the driveway to the road, I noticed, as I have constantly over the last few days, that it is cooler outdoors than inside at the moment.

There wasn’t a single soul in site. And the whole area seemed eerily silent.

About ten minutes later a friend of my daughters, a volunteer fireman, contacted her to let us know that a power pole had fallen over, just up the road and around the corner from our house.

The crackling sounds I had heard must have been the power arcing after the pole fell.

Emma and I took ourselves outside, braving the heat and the steep walk up the hill, to investigate the situation. Never without her iphone, the above photo is compliments of Emma.

As you can see, the pole covered the entry to a street, which just happens to be the only access to our own secluded pocket of houses in the village.

The power pole had been threatening to fall for some time, slanting over gradually further each day, although not regarded as a priority repair job by the local electricity company.

Umm…not a priority, we asked? A man could fit his fist into the centre of the pole, which had been eaten away by termites!

Within feet of this power pole children play, cars are parked, dogs are walked. The hill is a favourite exercise walking routine for a number of locals. The local public school is located just across the road!

Miracles do happen ~ no one was hurt.

At around 5:30 p.m. we were told to expect the power to be cut for at least two to three hours.

By nightfall, with bar-be-que cranked up and a salad prepared by candle light, we were told perhaps it would be another couple of hours.

The night air seemed to become hotter and more dense. Perhaps it was my imagination working overtime, knowing that the electric fans were still! When my family chimed in with complaints, I felt assured that it wasn’t just me complaining. The night felt so hot that I imagined a knife could have cut through the air!

Further investigation at around 10:30 p.m. showed that at least they were getting somewhere. A new pole was in place and the power lines were being reconnected.

Maybe there would be hope for today’s blog post after all, I thought. They just have to connect us back up before midnight….

After dosing off for about an hour on my favourite comfy lounge chair, I took myself off to bed at around 12:30 a.m. this morning.

Wouldn’t you know it, maybe two minutes after my head hit the pillow the power came back on!

Oh well, I couldn’t perform a miracle without electricity and add a post yesterday, although it has supplied me with an unexpected story to share today! 🙂
